Diss, or No Diss

This one kind of got me thinking about how I chose to budget my time. One piece of advice that I constantly received as I was thinking about going on the market was “be sure to get your dissertation done — a candidate with a dissertation in hand is much more marketable than an ABD”.
So I’ve charged full speed through the program, couple of national-level conference papers, and am going to be defending at the end of this semester (4th year).
Should be good to go, right? But the feedback I’m getting from the job market is that published folks are ahead of those with (only) dissertation in hand. Many of the candidates we interviewed at EMU (an R1) were a l-o-n-g way from finishing, but had instead focused on getting a publication.
Maybe my choice isn’t so good for the job market?

On the other hand, it is good for my health. Since I’m a “non-traditional” student, I have other things to think about…
… like what my SO will do to me if I don’t finish my dissertation and get on with my life.
Anyway, unless the cards fall right, looks like I will have lots of time to work on an article next semester. I’ll just have to sign up for a course.
Sigh.
