I saw this sign up on campus last fall … I sure hope one of the strategies that was discussed was careful proof reading and the use of spell check.

Spell check your grad school app, and also spell check everything else.
I do it two ways:
1. I use a program that checks my spelling as I type.
2. I frequently write in Microsoft Word; you can set it so it shows spelling errors immediately.
And of course you proofread!
